My biggest problem with Blogger, is the mobile blogging. Right now, it only accepts email addresses from one of the cell phone networks. Since mail on the iPhone is just regular mail it does not work. Blogger has an email-to-post option, but it does not accept pictures.
An AOL Journal allows email-to-post with pictures, so it is a great way to get pictures off the iPhone and up somewhere. I can also use IM (TinyBuddy IM!) to post blog entries. I IM the AOLJournals bot to do it. It's like blog posting on the command line.
My biggest negative for the AOL Journal: lack of anonymous comment support. So, if you want to leave an anonymous comment, post an comment to this blog entry on my other blog: [link removed Oct. 4 2007].
(Update Oct. 4, 2007: I have rethought the value of anonymous comment support. The vast majority of posts were either spam or not on-topic, so I am removing the entry on the other blog that allowed anonymous posts. I now think it is good that the AOL Journal does not support anonymous comments. There can still be issues with authenticated comments, but anonymous comments are worse.)
However, there are some neat features about using your AIM name (or even your email address) to leave a comment on this site. You will have to register the name you want or use an existing email address, but after you do that, you get some neat capabilities:
- You can comment on this blog
- Use the name (or email address) your register to sign in to AIM (and TinyBuddy IM)
- The registered name (or email address) is now a valid OpenID
Same thing with the OpenID support -- if you go to other web sites that accept OpenID, you can plug in this URL to sign in (using the whatever@yahoo.com example):
http://openid.aol.com/whatever@yahoo.com
Neat, but weird.
Note: if you do use your email address as an AIM identifier, and you leave a comment on this blog, your email address may appear in the comment. I'm not sure if this opens it for collection by spam bots, but be aware that it may be visible on the page.
In a future post, I'll explain how to set up your iPhone so you can post to an AOL Journal via email, including sending a picture.

...WOW!
Thanks great article.
Now, as strange as this may seem I'm really enjoying the "Journal" AOL How-To feature. I have to admit I am still entry level but it's a lot of fun. I still don't know all of the exciting features, but I promise I am going to get it eventually.
I would like to ask if time permits can you offer really good suggestions to me, I want to put my house picture on a Journal entry, my house is for sale. I am not certain how to put the photo of my house inside the Journal I create, I am going to take pictures with a regular throw away camera and then put those pictures on CD disc hopefully Wal-Mart photograph department can help me with this part.
I am confused as to how to include the photo in my Journal. I did NOT take the photos of my house yet, I am still working on writing my House For Sale By Owner advertisment to go along with my photo, I hope you can offer some really good suggestions.
Thanks looking forward to your future articles, journals. Also, lets say that each article/journal you write I want to be automatically notified how would I go about doing that?
Thanks again for your help.

elsganz: If you are creating your journal entry on your desktop/laptop computer, there is a picture icon above the text entry area, and it gives you some options for uploading pictures to the journal entry.
If you are using an iphone, if you turn on the Mobile blogging feature in your journal (click on the "Go Mobile" blue button in the top right corner of your journal's main page, you can send pictures you take from the iphone to an email address that AOL Journals will give you. They will then show up on your journal as a journal entry.
As far as getting updates to this journal, if you look in the top right of this journal, there should be a "Alert Me as Entries are Posted" link (you may have to sign in to see it). Also, if you use a feed reader, that would also notify you when new posts are made.
does anyone know how to add buddies on your iphone?
